(More customer reviews)I've had this umbrella for 2 years now and have used it through rain, windy rain, sleet, and snow.
The selling points of this umbrella are as follows:
1) The large size of the canopy allows for 2 people to stay under the umbrella during a rain shower and stay relatively dry. Because the canopy is an octagon shape, the flat diameter through the corners is 48 inches, while the flat diameter through the sides is 44 inches.
2) The automatic open and close feature allows for quick entry through doors (buildings, cars).
3) The double-vented canopy allows for wind to pass through so when you have windy rain, your umbrella won't become inverted or break as easily.
4) It's very compact for an umbrella that large, meaning I can fit it in my backpack easily.
That said, my complaints have to do with the double-vented canopy. While it allows wind to pass through, preventing inversion, it's not perfect:
1) During heavier rain showers, you must keep the umbrella perfectly flat. If you tilt the umbrella slightly, the rain will trickle through the vent onto you. I found out the hard way during a down pour.
2) The double-vented design does make the umbrella heavier and thicker. In comparison to my the Totes Superdome without the vented canopy, which I also have, the non-vented one is lighter and thinner than the vented one.
3) The vented canopy makes closing the umbrella slightly more difficult. If you look carefully, the skeleton (metal "fingers") of the vented canopy sit slightly staggered to the fingers of the outer canopy. I'm pretty careful with my umbrellas, but one day after about a year of use when I closed the umbrella, one of the finger hinges got twisted strangely because it sat eclipsed with the other metal finger instead of being staggered. Now, there's a kink in the umbrella when it's closed.
While the idea of the vented canopy is good, I think I'll stick to the un-vented version of this umbrella because it's lighter and doesn't leak rain through the top during heavy rain showers.
