Totes Big Top Double Canopy Auto Umbrella Review

Totes Big Top Double Canopy Auto Umbrella
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Buying an annual umbrella or two has become tiresome and, well, wasteful. I don't live in a particularly windy climate and our winter rains are no match to those of the north eastern coast states, however I do want and need an umbrella that will last more than a single winter season....and, it seems I've found that umbrella. The photograph here does not show the "double canopy" clearly - basically the top "row" is a second layer of fabric atop the base of the entire umbrella, a sort of "vent" that seems to allow the umbrella enough "give" so as not to invert itself and be rendered useless/inverted. I was surprised at the size of this umbrella canopy - mostly because I didn't bother to measure out the size before I purchased it because I knew I wanted a "bigger than standard" canopy. When the umbrella arrived (I had it delivered to my work place) it became the topic of lunchtime chatter - mostly along the lines of "wow, three or four people can stand under it without huddling into one mass of humanity" :)
The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five stars is because this thing is heavy - heavy compared to the "regular" auto-stick type umbrellas and just a bit too heavy for me to consider it ideal. However, the "heavy factor" is what creates the sturdiness (and when retracted and in the sleeve it would make for an impressive defensive whack!). The weight and size aren't conducive to just tossing in one's handbag, but it would do well in a larger tote or backpack-type bag. I have no regrets and look forward to using this umbrella for many years.

Totes Clip Case Auto Open/Auto Close Umbrella Review

The squalors in the spring/summer of NYC hit quickly, so I learned a long time ago to always carry an umbrella in my bag. Well after destroying $2 kmart specials over and over again, I decided to to get this one in it's place.
It comes with a nice canvas/spandex case and in it's case it measures just under 8.5"x3"x2". That's a bit larger than I had hoped/expected. But, it's a solidly made umbrella and doesn't saturate (then leak) nearly as easily as any other umbrella fabric umbrella that I've used.

Totes Micro Umbrella Review

Totes Micro Umbrella
Average Reviews:

This Micro Umbrella by Totes is compact for putting in your backpack or purse. When deployed, it is as big as a full-sized umbrella. I've had my Totes Micro Umbrella for a few years and it's held up to strong winds and heavy rain. It may not be the the spring-loaded kind that opens up automatically with the press of a button, but it folds up very compact (approximately 8-3/4" in length and 5-1/2" in diameter). The craftsmanship is superb, from the stitching on the velcro strap and the canopy, to the skeletal frame and the telescoping handle - the quality is simply top-notch. The Micro Umbrella is, in sum, practical, well-made, durable, and *compact*. I'm extremely pleased with it. Definitely recommended!

Totes 731 Vented Canopy Golf Umbrella Review

Totes 731 Vented Canopy Golf Umbrella
Average Reviews:

Wow. What lousy customer service. Imagine my surprise when the umbrella I received was plain black, not polka dotted like the picture shown. No big deal right? Mistakes happen, switch it out for the correct item, and move on. Wrong! When I called this vendor, I was rather rudely informed that they reserve the right to swap out colors/styles at their discretion. What? You won't send me the item that I actually ordered? Ok, forget it, I'll just send this back and call it a day. What, you won't cover shipping? A trip to the local UPS store revealed that, due to ths size and shape of the item, the shipping will cost as much as umbrella itself. Well, thanks for nothing. I'm now stuck with an umbrella I don't want, in a color I didn't request, and have wasted time on the phone and trying to deal with shipping. So, in summary, I recommend avoiding this vendor at all costs... it's just not worth it.

Totes Titanium Auto-Open/Close Umbrella, British Tan Review

Totes Titanium Auto-Open/Close Umbrella, British Tan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great compact umbrella that pretty much performs as it says. It opens fully on pressing the button and when the button is pressed again the canopy collapses to a fairly compact manageable state but, of course, it does not retract fully. You have to roll the canopy tight and then push the extended handle back down to the fully retracted position. One would not expect anything else. Totes is the best brand. I have now bought their larger version of this as the canopy on this little one is not quite as wide as I would have hoped. It is nice to have only a length of "10" to deal with in my briefcase when collapsed but 13+" for a really big canopy was tempting and the price was the same here on Amazon. Note that the data here says this umbrella is 9" but it is not. Measuring it I find that it is 10" including the grip. The larger version, the "Big Top", really is just 13" long, but it is quite thick when rolled up, so still not as portable.

Travel Accessories Samsonite Windguard Auto Open Umbrella Review

Travel Accessories Samsonite Windguard Auto Open Umbrella
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I do a lot of walking to & from work in downtown Philly, and over the past year I've thrown away about a half dozen umbrellas. Either they violently blow inside out and the spanners snap, or they just fold-in and get mangled up when pushed into the wind. This Samsonite umbrella is heavy-duty grade compared with most. It is actually two umbrellas in one. There's a big canopy, then a smaller one on top of that. Wind can blow between them. It feels heavier, too, since the spanners are a thick metal. When the wind kicks-up I don't worry about it blowing inside out. It's got a good-size grip and still folds up pretty small (about 14 inches long). This is a serious umbrella built to handle some pretty nasty weather.
Dec 21, 2010 Update:
A few months ago, I had the umbrella hanging off the back of a chair by its hand strap. It slipped off the chair and crashed on the tile floor, landing on the top center canopy button. The button broke off, and the next time I opened the umbrella, the canopy flew off the handle. I wish the top canopy button were metal! I'm still going to replace it with the same model, since I was very happy with its performance while in tact - I'll just be more careful with where I hang it!

Totes 762 Stormbeater Folding Umbrella Review

Totes 762 Stormbeater Folding Umbrella
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Updated Feb 25, 2011: Used the umbrella for the first time today and one of the clips broke free of its stitching leading to a loose flap in the vent of the umbrella. It wasn't even that windy, just raining. Not worth the $14 I paid for it. Even cheaper umbrellas last longer than just the first use. Never buying a Totes umbrella again.
Feb 13, 2011: As the listing states, I could not pick the color of the umbrella but I got a black and white umbrella that I am happy with color wise. I haven't had a chance to use the umbrella since I received it but I like the fact that it is vented and small enough to fit into my back pack. The shipping from J&R was quick. I will update this review if something goes wrong with the umbrella when I use it but so far I am happy with the purchase.

Superdome Collapsible Vented Canopy Umbrella by totes Review

Superdome Collapsible Vented Canopy Umbrella by totes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this umbrella for 2 years now and have used it through rain, windy rain, sleet, and snow.
The selling points of this umbrella are as follows:
1) The large size of the canopy allows for 2 people to stay under the umbrella during a rain shower and stay relatively dry. Because the canopy is an octagon shape, the flat diameter through the corners is 48 inches, while the flat diameter through the sides is 44 inches.
2) The automatic open and close feature allows for quick entry through doors (buildings, cars).
3) The double-vented canopy allows for wind to pass through so when you have windy rain, your umbrella won't become inverted or break as easily.
4) It's very compact for an umbrella that large, meaning I can fit it in my backpack easily.
That said, my complaints have to do with the double-vented canopy. While it allows wind to pass through, preventing inversion, it's not perfect:
1) During heavier rain showers, you must keep the umbrella perfectly flat. If you tilt the umbrella slightly, the rain will trickle through the vent onto you. I found out the hard way during a down pour.
2) The double-vented design does make the umbrella heavier and thicker. In comparison to my the Totes Superdome without the vented canopy, which I also have, the non-vented one is lighter and thinner than the vented one.
3) The vented canopy makes closing the umbrella slightly more difficult. If you look carefully, the skeleton (metal "fingers") of the vented canopy sit slightly staggered to the fingers of the outer canopy. I'm pretty careful with my umbrellas, but one day after about a year of use when I closed the umbrella, one of the finger hinges got twisted strangely because it sat eclipsed with the other metal finger instead of being staggered. Now, there's a kink in the umbrella when it's closed.
While the idea of the vented canopy is good, I think I'll stick to the un-vented version of this umbrella because it's lighter and doesn't leak rain through the top during heavy rain showers.
Hope this helps...

ShedRain WindPro® Auto Open & Close Umbrella, Black Review

ShedRain WindPro® Auto Open and Close Umbrella, Black
Average Reviews:

I used this lightly for a few weeks, and yet: 1) it turned inside out during the first moderately windy day, 2) it became permanently stuck open when I accidentally opened it with it wrapped up. This happened right at the 60 day return mark, so I can't even return the dang thing. I'm now looking at a different brand that's even cheaper for the same idea and sold locally.
What's funny is I've got a Totes umbrella that's lasted me 3+ years that I bought for $25. It's just too bulky to fit in the lockers at the gym, hence why I bought this one.

Totes Flat Auto Open Auto Close Umbrella Review

Totes Flat Auto Open Auto Close Umbrella
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this umbrella sparsely during a one month period. There were heavy winds one day and the umbrella inverted as most umbrellas do. However, it never recovered from that incident. I used it later on that day and one of the branches on top was permanently stuck so that I could not close it. Eventually I gave up, when I opened it to see if its doom was really met, I found that yes it was except this time the automatic close button did not work and the umbrella is now fated to forever-open (if I choose to keep it in one piece which is unlikely). It is a nice umbrella, but I have purchased 99-cent umbrellas that could handle wear better than this. A HORRIBLE buy and now I am out [...]...I best find that life-time warranty slip.

Totes Micro Auto Open/Auto Close Umbrella Review

Totes Micro Auto Open/Auto Close Umbrella
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The best thing about this umbrella is the compact size and the ease with which it automatically opens. Step out of your car, press a button, swoosh!, and umbrella is open. Very easy to open. The small size makes it very convenient to carry in a back pack or regular size purse. Closing the umbrella is more challenging, you have to use a bit of extra strength to retract and push down the umbrella stem. I also really like the appearance of the umbrella, and the handle - simple and modern. Some downsides: After using this umbrella through about a dozen rainy days this year, I noticed the steel arms holding up the umbrella canopy are starting to rust. Also, on a particularly windy day, the canopy flipped inside out, and a couple of steel arms became twisted out of shape. The result is that the umbrella does open, but not all the way as it used to. There is a lifetime warranty, and Totes will replace the umbrella, but you have to pay about $10.00 or so shipping/handling plus the cost to ship it to Totes.

Totes Golf Size Auto-Open/Close Umbrella Review

Totes Golf Size Auto-Open/Close Umbrella
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall this umbrella is of fair quality (3 out of 5 stars). The product is designed well and performs more than adequately. It falls short, however, of being a truly quality product for 3 reasons: the nylon used for the umbrella is only suitable for light to medium rain (it would not be adequate for heavy rain); part of the handle is painted plastic instead of being full rubber and it is not truly golf-size (it is only medium size). To make this umbrella worthy of 5 stars, totes needs to use heavier duty nylon, construct the handle completely out of rubber (the painted plastic is less durable and will degrade much quicker)and make the opened size a bit closer to golf-size. The auto-open feature works but does not have a precise feel to it. To end this review on a positive note, the nylon cover is constructed of heavy duty nylon and is the best umbrella cover I have ever seen (it fits perfectly, looks excellent and is very durable). The securing strap is much wider than normal which results in better stowing of the umbrella (with or without the cover). In conclusion, this umbrella is decent and has some good features but it definitely falls short of being a great product.

I'll keep this short and sweet, You can't go wrong with ShedRain, great customer service, lifetime warranty (which I have used on another umbrella, that I still have).
The design is very classy and the mechanical components work very smoothly, I haven't had a chance to try it out in gusty wind conditions ( I will update when I do). I'm not sure what kind of creative math gave them the 48" arch that is listed in the description (the best I could get was 46.5" over 3%, hey it makes a difference). I would take another inch and a half in the overall folded length if it added six or more inches to the arch measurement. That's all for now, Folks!

Needs two people to hold it. A strong wind gust will carry you way if the umbrella is tied to your hands. I mean literally this umbrella is strong and heavy and you need to tie it to stone if you are in some serious wind and rain. Or you better have a grip like a tennis pro
